Fanny Tang began her musical journey on the violin at age 6 in Hong Kong, switching to viola at age 13 after immigrating to Canada. Her mentors include Mr. Tak-Ng Lai during her formative years, Scott St. John during her undergrad at the University of Toronto, and André Roy during her graduate studies in McGill University. She won her first orchestra position at Orchestra London in 2006, and regularly plays with the Peterborough Symphony, Niagara Symphony, and other orchestras in Southern Ontario.
Tang co-founded The Margaritas Ensemble, a staple of the musical fabric of the Greater Toronto Area for more than 20 years! She is a prolific arranger, and you can hear her arrangements at many of the Margaritas Ensemble's performances. Her first performance with the Untitled Ensemble was for our Fundraiser for New Music in 2024.
Aside from performing on stage, Tang is proficient on music notation, one of the rarer specialties in the music industry, and is a trusted music engraver for Canadian composers such as Larysa Kuzmenko and the late Michael Conway Baker. Tang was honoured to experience the transformation of their handwritten new music into digital scores first hand.
Tang plays on a modern viola custom made for her by Canadian luthier David Prentice in 2004.
