Alondra Vega-ZaldivaR - Composition

I was born in Havana City, Cuba and began my musical studies at the age of 12 learning piano, solfege and music history. I quickly advanced through music school, receiving a place at the Conservatory of Music of Havana "Amadeo Roldan" to study Choral Conducting. In 2007 I arrived in Canada with my parents and began voice lessons in Toronto as I became accustomed to the language, the cold and the new surroundings. I was accepted in the music program of the University of Western Ontario where I majored in composition and did a minor in Italian. I graduated in 2013 with a BMus in Theory and Composition and two years later, a MMus in Composition.

Fresh out of school I decided to create my own performing opportunities by singing and premiering pieces by living composers. The idea evolved into the Art Song Collaborative Project, which brings Canadian and International composers together for the collaboration of a new opera each year. For my project I don all the possible hats: from composer to curator, from performer to director, from manager to advertiser. I have produced 4 operas through art songs since 2016 and am currently working on the release of their newest collaboration: Terra’s Resurgence. In August 2022 I was selected for Theatre By The Bay’s Indie Producer Co-op and have been learning about the role of the producer and non-for-profit organizations from their Artistic Director Iain Moggash. This summer I produced and performed my one woman opera SOPHIE in the Toronto Fringe Festival and the Simcoe County Theatre Festival, as well as saw the premiere of my latest piece Suite Cuba for STAB choir, piano, bandoneon and strings.
